I'm a bit cautious about using amp modeling ALL the time. I think it makes sense in certain situations (for instance covering a song that has a very specific sound).
I've now gigged with tonelab le twice. Both times I've used amp modeling sparingly, more or less as a booster. It does change the sound somewhat, but I seriously doubt anyone watching knew what happened. I'm doing this 'cause I tend to keep my "pedal" set on wah so I don't have the distortion pedals available. I'm starting to think that I'm going to use my old tubescreamer in the insert jack, but that's sort of getting away from the simplicity that the tonelab bought me (i.e. all-in-one). I could also use my old crybaby in the insert jack... or I could use both I suppose, but that's really getting carried away (and too much crap to haul around to gigs).
I think it depends on what type of music you play and how much time you want to spend setting up your pedal before you play. |

I'm hoping to use the amp/cab setup just to colour the tone as i used to do with the overdrive/distortion on my old multi effects (Boss ME5 which I retired after 20 years)
I can't see why you shouldn't be able to set up an amp simulation to sound like a tube screamer (or other overdive pedal) allowing the Pedal to be your Wah etc. (I quite like the Treble Boost)
At the moment I haven't put mine through my amp much as I have to respect the rest of my house/family. The first time I'll blast it will be at a gig in a week or two, so I need to be sure everythings going to sound at least as good as my old set up.
At the end of the day you just have to trust your ears! |

That's exactly what I do most of the time. It works pretty well. |

Firstly, I'm new to the site so Hi to everyone. I just tried out a few multi-fx units the other day so I haven't actually bought my Tonelab yet but I'm pretty sure I will, hence joining this board. In direct comparison it beat the Pod XT Live hands down. The Boss GT8 is very tempting as it can do so much but the tone from the Vox is incredibly valve-like, which brings me to my point. I want the Tonelab because I am a home player so it will give me access to great valve sounds at sensible volumes. I'd love a valve amp but I know I'll never be able to drive it hard enough so what's the point? For me the amp models are therefore essential yet it seems that you use it more for effects. I'd have thought that if you were using it largely as an effects box you'd be better off with the GT8. I assume I'm missing something as to how the Tonelab actually operates here but my knowledge of it so far is understandably limited at this stage. _________________ Ibanez RGT42

| I haven't used mine much thru my AC30 but have learned I had better results turning the amp mod off. I've been running thru the PA or headphones because of space issues. I hate to see that beautiful amp just sitting there. |

| I'd use your own wah pedal, that way you always have your wah and i think a cry baby sound better anyways. Plus if you have a good amp you don't want to use the amp sims just the FX's. So put the unit in the FX loop of your amp, but this makes the wah and other pedal sims useless because... most sound bad after distortion. If the loop was after the pedals the tonelab would be a lot more versatile. You can even get a midi channel switcher so when you change channels on the tonelab it changes channels on your amp. |

G'day all from Australia.
I'm finding it really interesting hearing people's views on using their TL within their setup. I've been fiddling with my tonelab for a few months now, and I am very happy with it....especially now that I can manipulate settings on my computer, it makes life a lot easier.
I come from using a very simple stage setup, 62RI Tele (with Duncan Lil 59 in Neck), through a modified SD1 and a DD3 into my 15 year old Blues Deluxe....so the expanded range of sounds I have now is just wonderful.
I love the clean sound of my Blues Deluxe, and have been reluctant to use any amp sim at all....but have tried some downloaded patches which include amp and cab sim.....and they sound great! The lesson for me has been to try everything and listen to the sounds generated, putting my preconceptions aside.
I play in an instrumental 5 piece, doing standards, Steely Dan covers, some Larry Carlton tunes and the like (yeah I'm in my 50's). The other guitarist in my band plays through a Pod XT....we both find his amp/cab sim sounds just awful, and he is just using Pod for Fx.
I will post some of my patches when I get myself a bit better organised.
Thanks everyone for the unselfish way things are shared on this site.
Especially, thanks to Wagdog for keeping this site running. _________________ Aussie Dan Fan |
